Kate Elliott, BECTU’s Equality Officer and Arti Dillon from the Writers, Producers and Directors Branch joined the sea of pink placards with the BECTU banner.

Commenting on the union’s participation, Kate said: “The Abortion Rights campaign organised an excellent protest; the turnout was fantastic and the end result so well deserved.

“I was proud to be there and seeing the turn-out first hand made me realise how strong feeling is about this emotive issue. Let’s hope that this attack on women’s rights doesn’t get raised again for some time.”

BECTU is affiliated to the Abortion Rights campaign.

Commenting on last night’s vote in the Commons which saw MPs affirm the current 24-week time limit for abortions by 304 votes to 233, Louise Hutchins, Abortion Rights campaign coordinator said: “The Commons vote against anti-abortion amendments is a decisive win for women and the pro-choice movement.

“Despite a sensationalist and misleading campaign by the anti-abortion lobby, women’s voices, the wealth of medical evidence and the majority of the population have been listened to. This must now be the end of anti-abortion attacks on women’s crucial rights”.
