ITV’s Results: BECTU says ITV must stay in public service and invest in programming

Media and entertainment union, BECTU, has urged ITV to reconnect with its public service broadcasting roots and to place a renewed focus on programme investment.

BECTU will also be continuing to press the case with Ofcom for public service broadcasting to continue to be provided by a range of sources, led by the BBC, as the regulator continues with its PSB review.

“Michael Grade appears to have stolen some of Charles Allen’s clothes. Just like his predecessor, Mr Grade wants the regulator to stop regulating his company whilst at the same time he wants ITV to continue to have the status of a public service broadcaster.” said a BECTU spokesperson.

“We have heard a lot today about the credit crunch and its impact on ITV’s half-yearly results. Performance targets for various parts of the business have been lowered whilst Mr Grade impresses upon the City that his turnaround plan is on track. Mr Grade has also thrown in the prospect of more job losses to keep the City happy.

“Sadly, the credit crunch is only one part of the story. What we have heard very little about, is original content and the essential business of commissioning homemade programmes which the audience wants to watch day in, day out.”

“ITV has been engaged in cuts for years to appease its backers; the company’s good fortunes lie in regaining its reputation for making quality, popular programming based on an investment in the creative force of its staff.” concluded BECTU.
