Kingswood Warren strike suspended

BECTU’s branch at BBC Kingswood Warren has suspended the strike planned for tomorrow, Friday 29 August.

The decision follows a new agreement with the BBC's Future Media & Technology Division to deliver serious discussions about the disputed plans for relocation. Erik Huggers, the newly appointed Director of FM&T, will take part in these fresh talks.

“In particular, BECTU hopes that the employer will listen carefully to representations from staff which question the suitability of the new accommodation.” commented BECTU’s national official, Anna Murray.

Staff fear that current proposals pose a threat to on-going research and development projects.

BECTU has also welcomed Erik Huggers’ decision to address all staff at Kingswood on Friday 29 August, on the same day as celebrations to mark 60 years of BBC Research at Kingswood Warren.

“BECTU members are proud of their contribution to that history and are keenly aware of their responsibilities to deliver digital switchover and other key projects for the BBC. The irony of the BBC’s current proposals and this year’s special celebration is not lost on us.” said Anna Murray.

The union’s main objective for the talks to come will be to secure an agreement which not only protects the research programme but which also recognises that positive treatment of staff is integral to the BBC’s success in this area.

The branch is intent on making significant progress by the end of September.

The BBC is selling the Kingswood Warren research base and plans to move staff to its White City offices.
