There was barely a spare seat at Regent Hall on Oxford Street on Wednesday night (3 April) for the VFX Forum.
Sign ups to the event via Facebook and Eventbrite were massively encouraging and the follow through was equally impressive. Well done to everyone who took part; the contributions from the floor were enthusiastic and considered and were a tribute to the skilled group which is VFX.
Meeting backs union organisation
After two hours of debate in which participants were introduced to BECTU's support for workers, both on a collective and an individual basis, and were given some insight into the options for pursuing dialogue with the employers, the meeting voted overwhelmingly to support BECTU's offer to organise the sector.
There was much discussion about the challenges for VFX in the US and Canada and about the need to show solidarity with VFX workers both in the UK and across the globe. Long hours, unpaid overtime, poor scheduling, little work/life balance and scant treatment of interns were just some of the issues raised at the meeting.
BECTU will be taking these issues forward with the steering group and will be in regular contact with the growing number of members.
How would you like to see the campaign progress? Do tell us and please use this space to share your views on the 3 April meeting, not least for colleagues unable to make it. Thanks again on behalf of Gerry Morrissey, Gus Baker and the rest of the BECTU team to everyone at the meeting last night. Follow us @vfxunionuk
