The claim
For the past year BECTU, the Directors' and Producers' Rights Society (DPRS) and the
Directors Guild of Great Britain have been collaborating
closely.
An agreement with the BBC, which recognises directors'
rights, already exists. A claim similar to the writers' agreements defining
appropriate payments for secondary rights has been submitted both to
the ITV companies and PACT. UK repeats would attract a percentage of the
original fee, and all other sales a royalty of 5.6% of the gross
price.
Improved contractual terms and appropriate minimum salary scales are
also included. No positive response has as yet been forthcoming, the
stock reply being that directors' contracts must be negotiated
individually.
A sanction is now required if we are to persuade the broadcasters to
negotiate. Rights assignment is that sanction.
The strategy was
unanimously approved by an extremely well attended open meeting of
directors last February, and has subsequently received the support of
directors' agents.
