TMA pay offer ballot

Regional theatre members are to vote on an improved pay and conditions offer.

The ballot covers those working in UK theatres managed by members of the TMA (Theatrical Management Association).

“This offer comes at a difficult time in terms of funding”

The offer, which applies to the minimum terms and conditions contained within the BECTU/TMA Agreement, comprises:

  • 4% increase on Grades 1-4 and performance rates
  • 3% increase on all other minimum pay rates
  • 0.5% increase in employers' pension contribution
  • Casual workers to be paid at double time for all hours worked between 2300 and 0900
  • Improvements to pay during adoption leave

Ballot papers are to be distributed today (4 May 2007) to back stage, front of house, box office, production and administration staff who work in theatres throughout the UK.

There is no recommendation to accept or reject the offer - members are asked by the union to judge it on its merits at a time when inflation was 4.6% at the anniversary date but Arts Councils and Local Authority funding is significantly lower.

BECTU Supervisory Official Willy Donaghy said: "This offer comes at a difficult time for the industry in terms of funding and so we will continue to lobby central and local government to ensure adequate investment for UK theatres.

"BECTU will continue to campaign against low pay in the theatres industry to ensure that our members do not continue to provide this hidden subsidy.

"Against this background the offer compares favourably with settlements in other sectors, but members are asked to judge it on its merits."

The ballot closes on 25 May 2007.
