Brixton strike cancelled

The next Brixton Ritzy cinema stoppage has been cancelled because of a new film whose production team support the dispute.

The one day strike, part of a series, scheduled for 5 June, has been moved to allow the launching of Taking Liberties at the Ritzy.

The film's blog says: "The Taking Liberties team wholly support the [Brixton Ritzy] BECTU members in their dispute".

Taking Liberties details "the shocking truth about the erosion of our fundamental civil liberties by Tony Blair's government" according to their website.

5 June was to be the third one day stoppage, following successful strikes on 26 May and 1 June.

The dispute centres on Ritzy owners City Screen's pay offer to increase wages from the National Minimum Wage of £5.35 to £5.41 per hour (or £5.50 without a sales bonus).

This is while the London Living Wage has been calculated at £7.20 and the poverty line at £6.25.

It is expected a further strike at the Ritzy will be announced shortly.
