GS election candidates

At the closing date for the BECTU General Secretary election, two candidates were nominated by branches: Roger Bolton and Vincent Feiner.

A postal ballot is therefore required, which will be administered by the independent scrutineer, Electoral Reform Ballot Services Ltd. Each BECTU member eligible to vote will be sent a ballot paper, together with the election address of each candidate, in the week commencing 2 March 1998. The final date for receipt of completed ballot papers by the independent scrutineer is 5 May 1998.

Under BECTU rule 38(d), branches may invite the candidates to address meetings, provided both candidates are invited. A refusal by one candidate to attend shall not preclude the other candidate being heard. The NEC has resolved that neither candidate shall receive travel or other expenses from the union in connection with such meetings (and this means also that branches may not offer candidates any expenses). No employee of the union (other than Roger Bolton as a candidate) may take part in such meetings.
