Driving to disaster

BECTU is collating details of driving accidents and near misses which could be due to excessive working hours.

Excessive working hours can take their toll in various ways. By building up long-term stress they can contribute to insomnia, digestive disorders, increased risk of heart disease, and increased risk of miscarriage in pregnant women.

More immediately, fatigue and stress put you at risk when driving home. Near misses, collisions and deaths on the road are a regular fact of life in the film and television industry.

BECTU is now gathering details of these incidents - not only accidents but also near misses. The union aims to build up a picture of such incidents and their relationship to hours and conditions.
