BECTU organises in new media

BECTU has held the first in a series of meetings to discuss how the union can help those working in new media.

16 people attended a meeting at BECTU Head Office on 16 November to discuss the problems facing workers in new media (websites, e-commerce, CD-ROM, etc.) and the ways in which BECTU can help them.

The meeting was called to build on BECTU's experience in organising and supporting film/TV freelances. Given the similarities between film/TV and new media in terms of contracts, practical problems, and even employers, BECTU is well placed to provide an effective service to workers in new media.

The discussion covered model contracts; rates of pay; copyright and credits; and health and safety.

There are of course clear differences between film/TV and new media. Despite the impact of digital technology, the film/TV industry has a relatively long history, and a set of working practices and job titles which have grown up over the years. Website design and e-commerce have emerged in a different context altogether. But despite these differences, common ground also appeared as discussion continued.

The next meeting will be held at 1900 on Monday 11 January 1999 at BECTU Head Office. All workers in new media are welcome.
