Health & safety initiative
BECTU is planning a series of health and safety courses, along with a quarterly bulletin, for it's members.
The initiative is being organised by BECTU officials Martin Spence and Peter Coggan who have recently become the union's lead officials on health and safety. Spence is mainly responsible for freelance issues, whilst Coggan is looking after permanently employed staff.
Peter Coggan commentated: "Health and safety remains a vital issue for all workers in our industry. While many employers do try to make their workplaces as safe as possible, pressures of time on productions can lead to corner cutting and accidents happening. It is most important that members in general, and Health and Safety Reps in particular, are kept abreast of developments in this area".
The courses will be for Health and Safety Reps and other BECTU members who have knowledge in this area or are interested in the subject.
The first edition of the quarterly bulletin will include information on the new Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), as well as an update on what's happening on the health and safety front in the feature film production sector.
BECTU members interested in attending the courses, or being added to the bulletin mailing list, should contact Tracey Hunt at BECTU Head Office.
