SOC vacancy
BECTU Branches are invited to nominate members to fill a remaining vacancy on the union's Standing Orders Committee.
Branch Circular 555 invited branches to submit nominations to fill vacancies on the Appeals Committee and Standing Orders Committee for the remainder of the 1999-2000 term of office. The closing date set was 17 September 1999.
There were three nominations for the two Appeals Committee vacancies, and BECTU's NEC (National Executive Committee) duly made appointments of two members, Mark Rivers and David Stratful, to that committee. However, no nominations were made to fill the one vacancy on the Standing Orders Committee.
The NEC has therefore set a renewed closing date of 5 November 1999 for branches to make further nominations to fill the vacancy on the Standing Orders Committee. Under BECTU rule 11(b) only paid-up members of the union are eligible to hold office. Under rule 42(a) no member of the NEC or Appeals Committee is eligible to be a member of the Standing Orders Committee.
If there is more than one nomination, the NEC shall determine the appointment in the same manner as is provided under rule for appointment in the same circumstance to the Appeals Committee, i.e. by the drawing of lots.
Nominations must be made in writing by an authorised branch officer, identifying the candidate in full and stating his/her BECTU membership number, and affirming that he/she is willing and eligible to be nominated. The closing date is 1200 on Friday 5 November 1999.
