BECTU Iraq statement

BECTU has issued a statement concerning possible military conflict with Iraq.

BECTU is sympathetic to the sentiments of those who wish to make a personal statement when war breaks out, but cannot offer protection against an employer who regards such action as a breach of discipline or as unofficial industrial action.

Employers can take legal action against unions in those circumstances, and we would have to repudiate such action as unlawful. We have a duty of care toward you to warn you of this.

BECTU recommends that anyone considering taking any action discusses it with their employer first, emphasising that it would be intended as a symbolic act of conscience, and as such would last only as long as is necessary to make that point.

There are other actions which Stop the War organisations are suggesting, such as a minute's silence at work, or placing lights in windows.

BECTU's banner will take part in public actions in London on the outbreak of war and this coming Saturday (22 March 2003).
