Learning workers sought

BECTU is seeking to recruit three project workers for the Soho Learning and Skills project.

BECTU has been commissioned by the London Central Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to carry out a learning needs survey of theatre and audio-visual workers in Soho and the West End.

The survey, which will be carried out by a small team of specially recruited researchers will seek to identify:

  • Basic and key skills needs
  • The demand for continuing professional development
  • The need for information advice and guidance
  • The need for a local learning centre
In particular the project will work to include what have become known as atypical workers and include casual, part-time and freelance workers. These types of employment, very common in both theatre and the audio-visual sector include many workers who find barriers to developing their learning and skills.

BECTU is seeking to recruit three part-time project workers for a fixed period of six months from the end of March/early April 2004.

The contracts will be offered on a 0.4 basis, approximately two days per week, some evening and possibly weekend working may be required to enable full access to the relevant workers. The posts will be paid at the BECTU organising official rate, pro rata. Part-time secondments from applicants in work are welcome and BECTU will advise and help in the process of seeking secondments where appropriate.

The posts will require excellent interpersonal skills, self-organisation and the ability to learn basic research methods. A good understanding of BECTU, its membership and the theatre and/or audio-visual sector are highly desirable.

If you would like an application form for the posts please contact David Cormack and copy to Sandra Vickers at BECTU Head Office. If you would like further details please contact Brian Kelly at BECTU Head Office.

Closing date for applications is 27 February 2004 with interviews on expected on 11 March 2004.
