FT2 is 21
Freelance training provider FT2 celebrates its 21st birthday this month.
The birthday of FT2 (Film and Television Freelance Training) was celebrated on 14 March at the Hop Cellars near London Bridge.
The event was attended by ex-graduates, tutors and sponsors from what is widely recognised as one of the best training initiative for entrants to the construction, production and technical areas of the film and broadcasting industries.
Lucy Bristow who was in the first round of graduates in 1986, told BECTU: "I didn't know anyone in film or TV so there is no way I would have been able to get started as a camera operator if it wasn't for FT2.
"It is a comprehensive training programme that is second to none.
"Apart from two nine-month stints while I went off to have my children, I have been lucky enough to have had freelance work ever since I graduated. I work across TV and film and have just finished working on a feature film called Pier Point which is due for release shortly."
BECTU is one of the founding members of FT2 and Brian Kelly sits on the board. "It is the opportunity to build up contacts that is so important in these industries," he said, "and FT2 allows students access to productions and apprenticeship-style working that is hard to find in any other course."
Assistant General Secretary Martin Spence commented: "It is the knowledge and insight coupled with a commitment to equality and diversity that distinguish FT2 from other training providers. BECTU is very happy to work with all our partners to ensure that FT2 and its unique contribution continues to grow year by year."
Nearly 300 people have graduated from FT2 training schemes which includes:
- New entrant technical training programme
- Setcrafts apprenticeship training scheme
- Independent companies researcher training scheme
- Freelance Skillset qualification assessment service
Its management board comprises representatives from the APA, BBC, BECTU, Channel 4, ITVA, MPA and PACT.
Depending on funding available, there are around 15 students accepted into the schemes every year.
