Union backs anti-war demo

Stop war leaflet

BECTU is supporting the Stop the War demonstration at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester on Saturday 23 September.

In line with a proposition carried at the union's annual conference in May this year, BECTU has lent its name to the anti-war demo, which coincides with the first day of Labour's own conference.

Organisers of the demonstration said:"Media commentators have now confirmed that the real reason Tony Blair's leadership is under pressure is because of his unconditional support for the US and Israel's bombing of Lebanon - but we need to make sure our voices are heard to shift the debate from personalities to policies.

"It's incredibly important that everyone who is opposed to the current British foreign policy that is (to say the least) failing to bring peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine or Lebanon joins this demonstration.

"Londoners have a particular responsibility: we can normally amble along to national demonstrations without much effort - unlike the rest of the country who have to organise travel and get up early. This time it's we who have to make that extra effort.

"To save money and guarantee a seat, book your rail travel on the chartered Stop the War 'peace train' online at www.stopwar.org.uk - it costs only £35. Group bookings welcome - ask your workplace, branch, faith or community group colleagues to book a block of tickets. Call the Stop the War office if you can do this, on 020 7278 669

"There are lots of materials available to help build support for the anti-war movement and in particular for the demonstration on 23 September. Please buy as much as you can use - the proceeds help pay for the campaigning and every leaflet and poster that you can use helps spread the word. Call the StW office on 020 7278 6694 with your order or email [email protected].
