Carlton creates new jobs

Carlton Television has honoured a pledge to give contract staff permanent posts.

As part of the pay settlement agreed in March, the company promised that any staff who had been on short term contract for two years or more would be offered permanent positions.

Job security had been one of many issues that brought pay talks to the brink of industrial action at the company's Nottingham and Birmingham sites.

After examining staff records, Carlton has announced that more than 100 contract staff will transfer into permanent posts with effect from July 1 this year.

BECTU has welcomed the move, and intends to continue pressing broadcasters throughout the UK to acknowledge that members should not be kept in limbo on successive short-term contracts in situations where staff are required on a permanent basis.
