Fears for Carlton studios

A round of redundancies at Carlton Nottingham has revived concerns for the site's future.

BECTU has entered negotiations with the company over proposals to cut studio and site services staff from 134 to 62.

According to management the redundancies are a direct consequence of ITV's decision to drop Crossroads, the soap which was being produced in the Nottingham studios.

Some areas of the site have already been mothballed, and BECTU is worried that the production centre will be unviable once the job cuts have been implemented.

In the negotiations the union will attempt to reduce the number of job losses, confine the redundancies to volunteers, and secure "bumping" opportunities for any staff who are willing to accept redundancy.
