BECTU and telecoms giant ntl: have agreed to explore ways of verifying support for union recognition at the company.

Union representatives met management on May 24, to discuss the company's intention to withdraw formal recognition from BECTU in parts of ntl: where the union is active, most significantly the Broadcast Division which operates transmitters for commercial broadcasters and emergency services.

The company had argued that reorganisation, and the sale of the Broadcast Division, had led to a decision that the existing union recognition agreement should be terminated.

However, after the May 24 talks, BECTU and ntl: management issued a joint statement (see box below:)

BECTU will be working closely with members in ntl to demonstrate solid support for continuing union recognition, and has suggested that ACAS should be involved in the process.

Members have received a letter from the union explaining the situation, and will be kept closely involved in developments.
