Recognition campaign at EastEnders
BECTU’s bid to secure recognition for freelances working on EastEnders is nearing a key stage.
Several months after the petition [2MB pdf] was launched BECTU is urging freelances to work together to get more signatures to the petition to push the level of support over the 50% mark.
If BECTU can secure the support of more than half of eligibile freelances then union recognition for freelances on this headline show will be in sight. Support in excess of 50% will be highly persuasive in the discussions which will follow formal submission of the application for recognition.
“If you know anyone who is working on EastEnders on a freelance basis or who has done such work during the last year, please ask them to sign the EastEnders Freelance Petition - they don’t have to be a member of BECTU to sign. They can print the petition off BECTU’s website, sign it and send it freepost to BECTU.”
BECTU recognition by the BBC for these workers will mean they can be represented on a group basis with the prospect of better pay and conditions and fairer and consistent treatment.
“With recognition, freelances will get the respect they deserve with rewards that reflect their significant contribution to EastEnders. There will be a knock-on benefit for staff too, who will be more confident that their prospects will not be undermined by what management often see as a cheaper option. The campaign at EastEnders is vital for the maintenance of everyone’s terms and conditions.” commented Jane Perry, BECTU lay official.

Supporters of the Petition will not have their names revealed to BBC management. The Petition may only ever be seen by an independent third party to verify the level of freelance support for recognition.
BECTU is already recognised by the BBC for freelances in Scotland, BBC Resources and the Natural History Unit.
