Pay rise agreed at Johnson Controls

Members at Johnson Controls International have voted to accept a 4% pay increase, backdated to the pay anniversary date of 1 July.

This year’s talks have been prolonged following the employer’s initial rejection of the union’s claim; however, the union’s team were determined to hold out for a reasonable offer.

“BECTU wants more JCI staff to become involved in shaping the relationship with their employer.”

JCI provides facilities management services to the BBC.

Organising Official, Suresh Chawla, commented: “We hope this makes a noticeable difference to our members' pay packets and to their household costs.

“After the disappointment with last year’s pro rata settlement, it was important for us to negotiate a deal that would not disadvantage new starters and we’re pleased that JCI have agreed with our proposal to withdraw their pro rata arrangement for staff with less than 12 months’ service.

“We also made it clear that we were not prepared to discuss any issues regarding productivity or flexibility as bolt ons to the annual pay talks.”

Union representatives at JCI are determined to continue to recruit new members on the back of this year’s pay deal. BECTU wants more JCI staff to become involved in shaping the relationship with their employer.

“BECTU membership offers staff the opportunity to ensure that their interests are fully represented; BECTU also gives staff the confidence to air their views.” Suresh Chawla explained.

Last year’s settlement with JCI, also set at 4%, was marred by the company’s decision to cut back on the award for staff with less than 12 months’ service.
