BECTU NEC Report to 2002 Conference appendix E: Training Committee strategic work plan 2001-2002

Annual training event

1 This will be a focal point for promoting and disseminating BECTU's work in lifelong learning. However, it will also serve a practical purpose in helping to further the aims and objectives of the Training Committee, provide a forum for lay and full-time officials to develop ideas and strategy on learning, and help in the development of learning representatives.

2 In 2002 the event will be a day long seminar for Arts & Entertainment workplace based learning representatives.

Annual presentation of Training Committee report to conference

3 The Training Committee will take steps to ensure that the opportunities to promote and disseminate our work to annual conference 2002 are maximised. This will be achieved through presentations to main conference, divisional conferences and fringe events, and by ensuring that a high profile presence is provided at the conference venue, where information can be made available to delegates.

Union Learning Representatives

4 At the heart of the Training Committee's work this year is the recruitment, training and development of union learning representatives. There are currently approximately 20 BECTU active union learning representatives. By conference 2002 the Training Committee has set a target to double that number to 40.

Industrial strategy - working with divisions for Lifelong Learning

5 The Training Committee has set the following specific priorities for supporting the industrial work of divisions:

  • Arts and Entertainment - Continue to support the work of the SOLT and TMA Joint working Parties on Training
  • Laboratories - Work with the division to develop a joint training policy with at least one of the major employers.
  • Regional and London Production - Update the PACT/BECTU Policy on Training
  • BBC/Independent Broadcasting - Raise awareness of training issues through the Training Officer making presentations to the divisional committees. Carry out an audit of training and development agreements in these sectors.

Externally funded projects

6 The Training Committee recognises the impact both financial and cultural of BECTU's innovative and ground-breaking project work over the last four years, and will continue to support the development of externally funded projects subject to the following criteria:

7 There must be a proven need for the work to be carried out.

  • There must be a clear benefit for BECTU members and for the union organisationally.
  • BECTU must have a clear management and delivery role.
  • The work must be supported by the relevant division/s.

Promotion and marketing

8 The Training Committee will work to ensure that the union's work in lifelong learning is disseminated to the widest possible audience. The following targets for increasing raising the profile of our work have been set:

  • By the end of 2001 there will be specific training pages on the BECTU website relating to all of the activities of the Training Committee and to the various projects that BECTU is involved in.
  • There will be a training story in each edition of Stage Screen & Radio.
  • The union will issue press releases to industry and the training and education press about training initiatives and developments.

Representation on external organisations

9 The Training Committee will seek to ensure that BECTU has the appropriate representation on the relevant training agencies for the sector, by making recommendations to the National Executive Committee.
