BECTU NEC Report to 2003 Conference appendix C: Membership statistics

Subject: Membership statistics
Date: 8 January 2003
I attach the paid-up membership statistics for BECTU as at 31 December 2002 which will be used in annual returns and for calculating affiliations. The statistics should be read in conjunction with the Notes given below. The previous five years' statistics are given for comparison. For the second year there is a comprehensive gender breakdown on a geographical and divisional basis. I should like to thank the Database Administrator, Gabi Klsters, for her assistance in compiling these statistics.
The total membership shows a small increase (1.8%) over the 2001 figure, though the proportion of men and women remains unchanged at two thirds to one third. The largest increase in membership (6.9%) was in Scotland. The proportion of women members decreased in England and the Republic of Ireland, and in the Arts & Entertainment division.
The number of members with unknown addresses dropped below 1,000 for the first time. Though still relatively small, the number of members claiming statutory exemption from contributing to the political fund rose significantly.

Notes to the membership statistics
1 This is the number statutorily exempt through having contracted-out of contributing to the political fund. Members outside Great Britain are not required to contribute. In addition, there are 3 former ACTT "fully paid-up" members who retain full membership under rule 20 but who pay no subscription and consequently do not contribute to the political fund. Hence the total number of members contributing to the political fund as at 31 December 2002 is 24,443 (Great Britain membership minus statutorily exempt members minus "fully paid up" members).
2 The figure in brackets after each division's membership is the number of NEC places determined by that membership. NEC places as at 31 December 1998, 2000 and 2002 are notional only, biennial NEC elections not being due the following years.
3 The divisional figures are subject to challenge by branches under rule 33(c). Challenges to the figures as at 31 December 1999 were successfully made, and resulted in an additional NEC place for representatives of the London Production division.
