Directors' rights campaign

BECTU is participating in a major joint campaign pressing for the rights of film and television directors.

The campaign, supported by the Directors' and Producers' Rights Society and the Directors Guild of Great Britain as well as BECTU, was launched in late November 1997 in London.

New legislation, implementing European Union law, came into force in the UK on 1 December 1996. This recognised film and television directors as co-authors and co-first owners of copyright in any work they direct. They also have the unwaivable right to equitable remuneration for the rental of copies of such work.

Directors are now insisting that these rights are fully recognised by producers and broadcasters and that they receive remuneration not only arising out of rental but for all exploitation of their work.

Petition forms are being circulated to all director BECTU members inviting them to commit to the campaign.
