AGS contractual change
BECTU's NEC has agreed to modify the contractual terms for new Assistant General Secretary positions.
Nominations for candidates in the two elections for Assistant General Secretaries close on 10 September 1999. The National Executive Committee (NEC) has agreed a modification in the main contractual terms originally outlined.
If BECTU branches have made a nomination, those main terms should have been drawn to the attention of the candidate. Branches should now also draw the modification described below to the attention of the candidate, who may, if he/she considers it appropriate, withdraw his/her nomination. The General Secretary will also draw the matter to the attention of all candidates after nominations close and before any ballot opens.
The modification is in the main contractual terms headed "Notice" (page 3 of Branch Circular 553), which now reads:
"The Assistant General Secretaries are required to give at least twelve weeks' notice of termination of employment."
The reason for the modification is to remove an inconsistency between this main contractual term and those concerning length of office.
