Unions oppose TV sell-off
BECTU, the Musicians Union and Equity are running an on-line petition opposing Ofcom's plans for the UK's analogue television spectrum.
Ofcom plans to sell-off the "left over" part of the UHF television band for other use when the UK moves to digital TV.
This band is also used for so called Program Making and Special Events (PMSE), covering usage of radio microphone, radio talkback/foldback and wireless communications systems.
The petition, which closes on 19 June 2007, asks "the Prime Minister to halt the selling off of radio spectrum used for PMSE until a suitable alternative is found".
PMSE is used by broadcasters, West End Theatres, the film industry, pop concerts and major sporting events.
The unions believe that "overall the impact on UK PLC of the loss of this spectrum would be immense, impacting on everything from church services through to the Olympic Games".
As many members as possible are therefore urged to sign the petition, which is being hosted on the Prime Minister's 10 Downing Street site.
Members are also asked to contact their local MP using the following letter which can be downloaded in the following file formats:
