Welcome for theatre skills academy

The government has given Creative and Cultural Skills the go-ahead to build a new National Skills Academy for theatre.

BECTU has given a warm welcome to today’s announcement which will see a new training centre built in Thurrock to deliver first-class training to theatre workers.

The government has pledged £15 million to support the initiative in recognition of the significant contribution which the creative industries make to the UK economy.

Research had identified large skills gaps and shortages which, if left unattended, would have presented a huge setback for the future good health of the UK’s theatre and live events sectors.

Gerry Morrissey, BECTU’s General Secretary, commented:

“Congratulations to everyone involved. Today’s announcement is vital for the future development of theatre in the UK. We look forward to high standards of training being delivered which will ensure that theatre technicians, among whom are many BECTU members, get the recognition they deserve for the challenging work they do.”

Willy Donaghy, BECTU Supervisory Official added:

“BECTU has supported these plans throughout and there is no question that this centre will expand the career development opportunities for our members and theatre technicians generally. We will play our part in making the centre a success and look forward to the opening in a few years’ time.”

Creative and Cultural Skills is the Sector Skills Council for the creative and cultural industries; the body, which brings together employers, industry practitioners and trade unions is charged with ensuring that the industries skills’ needs are identified and met. CCS’s remit covers advertising, crafts, cultural heritage, design, music and performing, literary and visual arts.
