2009 education bursary

Applications are invited from BECTU members for the 2009 Alfie Squires Educational Bursary.

The bursary makes available £5000 towards union-related education for BECTU members.

“Awards are made at the discretion of the NEC, and are intended as a contribution towards course fees and books.”

Alfie Squires was a larger-than-life and much-loved activist in NATTKE and BETA, two of BECTU’s predecessor unions, who died at a tragically early age in July 1990.

He had striven tirelessly for the creation of BECTU through the amalgamation of ACTT and BETA six months later. Alfie was posthumously made the first Honorary Member of BECTU.

In his memory BECTU’s NEC makes available each year £5000 for bursaries towards trade union related education for BECTU members, particularly those in difficult circumstances (note support is not available for vocational education).

Awards are made at the discretion of the NEC, and are intended as a contribution towards course fees and books. Applicants seeking a sum of money which leaves further assistance available to other members may receive preference.

To apply for the bursary the application form [64k pdf] must be completed and returned to BECTU Head Office before 3 July 2009.
