Glasgow strike suspended

Strike action on 1 August at Culture and Sport Glasgow has been suspended following agreement to reopen negotiations.

In a last minute deal, the threat of wide ranging industrial action by BECTU members, which was due to start with a 24-hour strike, has brought Culture and Sport Glasgow management back to the negotiating table.

BECTU and the company have reached a formal agreement to hold a series of meetings and hearings within the next three weeks in an effort to find a resolution to the dispute.

BECTU’s agreement to suspend the industrial action will expire on 29 August 2008 and should the new talks fail then the industrial action will commence on that date.

Included in the accord reached today is Culture and Sport Glasgow’s agreement to BECTU’s request that a meeting of all the unions within the company should take place to resume discussions on the company's proposals over annual leave and the annual pay rise.

Commenting on today’s developments Paul McManus, BECTU’s Scottish Officer, said: “We are pleased that we have an agreement to restart concerted efforts to resolve this dispute”.
