Goodman and Morrissey returned

No ballot of members is required in the BECTU AGS elections following unopposed nominations.

Branch nominations of candidates for election as BECTU's first Assistant General Secretaries (AGS) closed 1200 on Friday 10 September. In each of the two elections only one candidate was nominated, so no ballot of members is needed.

Both successful candidates were already occupying the posts on an acting basis, but under new rules agreed at BECTU's rules conference last June the posts had to be confirmed through the electoral process.

In the Laboratories, London Production and Regional Production divisional grouping, Marilyn Goodman was nominated by 45 branches with a total membership of 8,587. Two nominations received late had to be rejected.

In the Arts & Entertainment, BBC and Independent Broadcasting divisional grouping, 66 branches with members totalling 7,815 nominated Gerry Morrissey. No nominations were rejected.

General Secretary Roger Bolton said, "I'm really pleased that both candidates received such resounding endorsements from their divisions, and look forward to working with Marilyn and Gerry as a team." The General Secretary formally confirmed to BECTU Branches that the requirements of the union's rule 38(b)-(h) as applicable under rule 39 were satisfied, and the report of the independent scrutineer, Electoral Reform Ballot Services - required by law even when elections are uncontested - was circulated verbatim with the results.
